Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship

Division Overview
The forensic teaching staff consists of forensic psychiatrists, psychiatrists, forensic psychologists, psychologists, and attorneys.  Teaching activities involve case consultation, peer review, and didactic seminars.  The psychiatry resident seminars cover topics in civil and criminal forensic psychiatry pertinent to the practicing psychiatrist.

Beginning in the fall of 2008, a course on Mental Health and the Law was taught by Northwestern University Psychiatry and Law faculty to law students.

The Division also organizes continuing professional education seminars in the community.

What is Forensic Psychiatry?
Forensic psychiatry is the psychiatry subspecialty that deals with the interface of mental health issues and the law.  Forensic psychiatry focuses on interrelationships with civil, criminal and administrative law; and evaluation and specialized treatment of individuals involved with the legal system, incarcerated in jails, prisons, and forensic psychiatry hospitals.  This specialty is formally recognized by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology which offers added qualifications and board certification in this field.
