Clinical Psychology Doctoral & Internship Program

Welcome to the Division of Psychology, a large and diverse organization that offers graduate, internship, and postdoctoral training programs in Clinical Psychology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. You will find complete information on this website if you plan to apply for admission to one of our programs or just want to learn about our research, training, and clinical offerings. Our doctoral and internship programs are accredited by the American Psychological Association (750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242 | 202-336-5979).

Clinical Psychology Doctoral (PhD) Program

The doctoral program offers a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology on Northwestern University’s Chicago campus. The doctoral program, which is committed to a scientist-practitioner model, is distinguished in two ways from other programs.

First, we offer excellent training in the science of psychology at a nationally prominent medical center. Our faculty and students collaborate with clinical psychologists, cognitive psychologists, developmental psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, neuroscientists, behavioral economists, sociologists, and engineering scientists on research projects investigating autism spectrum disorders, behavioral health promotion, dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases, depression and suicide, developmental psychopathology, gastrointestinal conditions, health disparities, mental health services, nicotine dependence, schizophrenia, and the interface of the criminal justice and mental health. In the past year, our faculty were investigators on over $13 million in grant funding.  Because of our placement in an academic medical center, we offer a broad range of exciting research opportunities.

Second, we continue to honor a long tradition of excellence in clinical training by insisting that our students aspire to a level of clinical sophistication unmatched by most training programs. An unusually dedicated team of faculty members offers supervision in a variety of psychiatric and medical settings. Emphasis is placed on developing an expertise in the most contemporary evidence-based approaches to assessment and treatment.

Clinical Psychology Internship & Postdoctoral Program

Our two-year internship and postdoctoral fellowship program in clinical psychology is sponsored jointely by Northwestern University and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The internship is the second in the United States to be accredited by the American Psychological Association on October 1, 1955.  It is designed to prepare trainees for careers as professional psychologists in academic medical centers. Like our doctoral program, the internship and postdoctoral fellowship program develops critically-minded psychologists who are, at the same time, exceptional clinicians and creative clinical scholars.

The Division of Psychology at Northwestern has a rich history, a distinguished faculty, and a tradition of clinical and research excellence. Our programs are at the forefront of the field. Research conducted at Northwestern-from basic and translational science to clinical outcomes research and social policy-has garnered national attention. Our clinical programs and training opportunities are exceptional. We invite you to explore our many offerings.
