Information for Applicants
The McGaw/Northwestern Psychiatry Training Program accepts applications from graduates of medical schools approved by the LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education). We also consider applicants certified by the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates)) who have completed all necessary requirements for training in the United States.
Our program primarily accepts applicants for training in general psychiatry in the PGY1 year. Occasionally PGY2 or 3 positions become available in the program, but these positions are filled outside of the NRMP (National Resident Matching Program).
We base our selection of residents on the content of the ERAS application as well as interviews with faculty and input from our current residents. On interview days, candidates will meet with three or more faculty members, and meet with individual residents as well as resident groups. The interview day gives the program an opportunity to get to know the candidate in more depth, and allows the candidate to get a good “feel” for the program.
The Research Showcase November 8th and 9th
At Northwestern we have a special interest in “growing” the future leaders of our field, and we are dedicated to providing the best research training and mentorship for interested candidates. We have a wide variety of research programs situated in a world-class university setting, and a training program that provides maximum flexibility for the four years of residency. We can also offer a funded fifth research year.
If you believe you are interested in developing a research career, please ask about scheduling your interviews during the two days of our “Research Showcase”: November 8th and 9th. During the Showcase, you will meet with all the research leaders in the Department, hear presentations of their work, tour facilities, and talk with potential mentors.
